Pipe Plus damage prevention training is provided by North Carolina 811 and PIPES Plus partners. This training is designed to equip individuals with crucial knowledge to protect themselves, their teams, and underground utilities during excavation activities. This initiative is part of a broader national effort to promote safe digging practices, prevent damage, and ensure effective emergency responses. The training is delivered through a video-based format, making it accessible and engaging for participants.

The comprehensive curriculum covers a wide range of topics essential for safe excavation. Participants will learn about the importance of contacting 811 before digging, when to contact 811, and key industry terms and definitions. The training also includes practical guidance on white lining project areas, understanding the five steps to safe digging, and navigating the various types of locate tickets. Additionally, it addresses the locating process, color codes, private lines, easements, right of ways, and the concept of positive response. Other critical areas covered include the tolerance zone, update and revise procedures, and best practices for handling electric, telecommunication, water, sewer, and gas lines.


Remote Ticket Entry (RTE) is a complimentary service offered by NC811, designed to streamline the process for professional excavators to submit locate requests electronically. This service can be accessed via a computer or smart device with an internet connection, allowing users to process requests 24/7, all year round. It is particularly beneficial for those who submit over 50 new locate requests per month. To utilize this service, live training is required to ensure users are well-versed in the system’s functionalities.

The benefits of RTE are extensive. Users can define locate descriptions in their own words, submit notices at any time, and instantly receive electronic, printable copies of their tickets. Additionally, they have free access to four years of archived tickets and can view a listing of member facility operators and their contact information. The most current NC811 map, complete with an aerial view, is also available. Live help is accessible Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm, and users can access and receive Positive Response data. The system also facilitates interactive locate requests between the RTE user and Customer Service Representatives (CSR).

The training is free of charge; however, a request for training must be submitted as it is currently conducted remotely with one of our RTE staff members.
